British researchers develop method for growing lab-grown organs – Xcelerate

Marsdenia longifolia is a woody, erect shrub or small tree that grows in a wide range of habitats in many countries in Africa, Indo-China, eastern Australia and Pacific Islands.

The Latin specific epithet longifolia means “long-leaved”, referring to the long petiolate, spathulate, sericeous, glabrous (hairless) leaves of M. longifolia.

Marsdenia longifolia is a shrub or small tree growing to tall. Its stems are usually slender and straight, but may be angled, crooked, spiny or angled. The leaves have a soft grey-green lamina, about long and lanceolate, rounded at the apex, with parallel sides and a blunt, fine apex. The pale-coloured petioles are glabrous except for a minute fringe of short yellow hairs.

The flowers, which lack petals, have two to four yellow stamens arranged in a tube; the upper part of the tube forms a hood. Flowering occurs from December to May (June in Western Australia) but may be without flowers until October. The fruit, which is a berry with a double stone, is round, about in diameter, grey with bluish streaks.

The species was first formally described in 1818 by the German botanist Johann Reinhold von Donner in the book Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen.

Marsdenia longifolia is cultivated as a garden plant for its attractive berries.

Distribution and habitat
Marsdenia longifolia occurs from Australia and Southeast Asia to New Zealand and Fiji. Its natural habitat is forests and woodlands in dry areas.

In Australia, it is common in dry sclerophyll forests and open woodlands in the north and northwest of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the Kimber
